More
than one-fourth of
U.S.
businesses are not prepared for the changes in the
American workforce as a record number of aging employees
retire, according to the results of a new national
survey by researchers at Boston College.

NEW
LEGISLATION PROPOSES PAID SICK LEAVE
The
Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and
Pensions recently heard testimony (2-13-07) on the
proposed Healthy Families Act (HFA), a bill that
would guarantee employees seven days of paid sick
leave per year. The bill (S. 910) was first
introduced before Congress two years ago, but was
re-introduced by Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA) on
March 15, 2007.

WALGREENS SUED FOR
JOB BIAS
AGAINST BLACKS
The
U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has
filed an employment discrimination class lawsuit against
Walgreen Co., the Illinois-based national drugstore
chain, alleging widespread racial bias against thousands
of African-American workers. The
EEOC charges in the suit that Walgreens assigns
managers, management trainees, and pharmacists to
low-performing stores and to stores in African American
communities because of their race.

NEW EEOC PUBLICATION ON THE EMPLOYMENT OF HEALTH
CARE WORKERS
A new
fact sheet released by the U.S. Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission (EEOC) focuses on the application
of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to
employees and job applicants in the health care
industry. Although the rules under Title I of the ADA
are the same for employers and individuals with
disabilities in all industries, this fact sheet explains
how the ADA applies to some unique situations that may
arise in the health care setting.
